material dramaturgy

In 2023 I delivered a workshop for University of Leeds students, co-led with Dr Yaron Shyldkrot.

I prepared some texts in advance for the students’ reading covering key concepts in terms of working with materials, material agency and material meaning, from Jane Bennet’s Vibrant Matter, Robin Wall-Kimmerer’s Gathering Moss, and The Theatre of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio.

The students brought a material and we ran through some embodied work to connect with that material and notice its properties, before they made some short scenographic performances alone and in groups. As the workshop went on we added light, sound, scale and the students determined how they wanted the audience to view the materials.
